Building and Maintaining a Compost System
School: Palouse Prairie Charter School
City/State: Moscow, ID
Grade(s): 7
Subject(s): Science and Technology
Project Overview
7th-grade students designed a compost system for the school based on research and worked with compost engineer experts as part of our soil expedition (Dead or Alive - the Dirt on Soil). Students first learned about soil, the importance of carbon in soil, what plants need, and nitrogen cycling. Students researched how much waste our school generates in the lunchroom each day. They also performed a site visit to see a compost system firsthand. They worked collaboratively to create an informative slide show presentation that they presented to our school's director, school board, and incoming 7th graders.
