Project Overview
This project entry is not really a project: it is a collection of programs, across a number of schools, which describe celebrations of learning, also called exhibitions of learning or school exhibition nights. Celebrations of learning are hosted by Expeditionary Learning Schools (and schools beyond the network) to both celebrate the accomplishment of students and for parents and community members to understand the work of the school.
Unlike schools in which parents come to an open house only to see the work of their own children, these celebrations are organized so that visitors are introduced to the work of students and classrooms throughout the school – reinforcing the notion of a school culture and community – and the common mission and structures of the school.
The text of these programs explains the different expeditions happening in different parts of the school, in varying levels of detail.
How This Project Can Be Useful
- Models the importance of providing a clear, engaging program to guide parents/community members through an evening exhibition – without such a program, community members may limit their visit to the classrooms or work of their relatives only
- Different formats and text demonstrate different ways to explain Expeditionary Learning and provide background information on projects and investigations
- Shows a school-wide picture of Learning expeditions – useful as a way to get an overall sense of what a school might be working on at any one time
- Notice the way different formats and designs engage the viewer
