Project Overview
These digital photographs were taken by students from the Meadow Brook High School in Chesterfield County, Virginia as part of a study of photography and project on identity. Although the photographs were self-composed and self-conceived, the actual pictures were taken by a classmate. Some of the photos were color-tinted on a black and white format.
Students critiqued each other’s work, which helped students learn and apply techniques for composition skills and translating conceptual thinking into actual photography.
How This Project Can Be Useful
- Excellent example of photographic portraits
- Highlights a collaborative art project, in which each student had to communicate her or his vision to another student
- Demonstrates powerful imagery captured through digital photography
- Creative use of the idea of portraiture: notice the intriguing use of collage in the last image; notice the innovative use of perspective in the picture of the student taken through the basketball net
