Project Overview

Writing with evidence is an important skill for students to learn, but how often do they use mathematics as evidence? Students in Tom Totushek's Algebra 1 classes at Saint Paul's Open World Learning Community (OWL) research their state's budget and compare it against things they think the state should value (or things the state says they value). Is the state spending its money wisely? Is the spending the state is doing having the impact it should? Are there alternatives the state should consider? In the end the students create a publication to share with their elected state representatives and senators, along with other policy makers, and present their findings in the Capitol Rotunda.
