Stories in the Sky:
Why do authors write about the sun, moon and stars?
What patterns can we observe in the sky?
By The First Grade Class, Mrs. Harris
To answer the guiding questions “why do authors write about the sun, moon, and stars?” and “what patterns can we observe in the sky?”, students explored a variety of narrative texts about the sun, moon and stars. First graders participated in close read aloud lessons, role-plays, reading responses, yoga and art activities to help them understand how and why authors write about the mysteries in the sky. Students used their knowledge to create sun catchers, watercolor nightscapes and nocturnal animal rock art to display with their sky poetry.
Using scientific observation, experiments, and research skills, students learned more about observable patterns in the sky. During our onsite field work with Northern Stars Planetarium we had the opportunity to participate in the “Star Stories” presentation. We were thankful to work with Mr. John Meader as we furthered our understanding of the earth’s relationship to the sun, moon and stars. In addition, students listened to expert storytelling as John retold a collection of stories, myths and legends about the sky and constellations. This new knowledge helped students as they communicated with shadows during our shadow puppet retelling of “Stellaluna.”
