Project Overview

Seventh grade students at High Tech Middle in San Diego, California created this collection of stories as a result of hundreds of hours of writer’s workshop.

In order to culture a genuine love of writing, students were allowed to write about any topic of their choosing. The nature of workshop writing relies on self-reflection, peer critique, and coaching from the teacher. This book is written and edited entirely by students. It exemplifies the pieces that the authors feel are their best works.

How This Project Can Be Useful

  • Highlights a format that allows the work of each student to be individually assessed
  • Writing is very strong and clear, and reflects the extensive editing process
  • Shows a level of writing that can be achieved when students are allowed to choose topics that they find interesting and meaningful
  • Provides a range of short essays on topics that are of interest to middle school students
