Project Overview
Students from the Gary and Jerri-Ann Jacobs High Tech High in San Diego, California, created this calendar which features information about San Diego Bay.
As a means for introducing people to a forthcoming book (since published) entitled, “San Diego Bay: A Story of Exploitation and Restoration” (see project #321), students share information they have collected through original research on the bay through this calendar.
Each month features a different aspect of the natural or cultural history of the bay and includes photographs (most of which are student-taken) and original writing by students. The text includes a “history” and “biology” section on each page in which students convey information they have collected through their research.
Students worked extensively with many local experts and volunteers. For a full description, see entry #321.
This project was supported by the Unified Port of San Diego, which serves to cohesively introduce people to San Diego’s waterfront, though public and government agencies.
This calendar was followed by a series of similar calendars produced by students for public sale that document the tides for the bay (see project #295a)
The original calendar dimensions are 8 ½ by 5 ½ inches. This calendar, and others like it, may be purchased from the school.
How This Project Can Be Useful
- Exemplary model of a professional quality calendar produced by students
- Represents a means for extending work on a large investigation to a smaller product – same work goes into both, though allows for production of multiple products
- A genuinely useful product that has an authentic audience
- Quality of the writing and photographs is high
- Stunning digital photography – see the February photo of an osprey with a caught fish
