Self-portrait Poster

School: The College School

City/State: St. Louis, MO

Grade(s): K

Format(s): Poster: General

Subject(s): Visual Arts

Project Overview

This poster of outline self-portraits was done by kindergarten students from the College School in St. Louis, Missouri. Each student did an illustration of him or herself; the images were then cut and pasted digitally into one poster.

Because the school has a Reggio Emilia approach, inspired by the art-rich and discovery-centered preschools of Reggio Emilia, Italy, much of the project work is given the time and support to reach high quality.

The original poster was 11 by 17 inches, which created an oversized feel but still is easy to reproduce.

For a similar idea done in color on a larger scale, see the entry #168 that was produced by another kindergarten class at the same school in a different year.

How This Project Can Be Useful

  • Simple, useful project done with unusual care and beauty; the idea is not novel, but the quality of work is striking
  • The layout is clean and nicely crafted
  • The scale is duplicable – easy to make color copies
  • Highlights a format that individualizes each student in a classroom while also showing the class as a whole
  • Honors the work of kindergarten students
  • An example of a “sellable” product – one that people were willing to pay for
  • The different styles and sophistication of illustration allows the viewer to get a sense of the range of students in this class
  • Using a range of colors adds to the engaging display of portraits
