Ocean Animal Trump Cards

School: East End Community School

City/State: Portland, ME

Grade(s): 1, 2

Format(s): Trading card

Subject(s): English Language Arts, Science and Technology, Visual Arts

Project Overview

1st and 2nd grade students from the East End Community School in Portland, Maine created these game cards as part of a learning expedition on ocean life.

The cards combine the display of information – as appears on the many note cards and trading cards featured in this project archive – with potential use in an group card game that can reinforce the learning of information from the study.

Each student created a card for a class deck, which were used to play a game called Trump. Each card has the same front – see left side of page 1; the back of each card contains an illustration of an ocean animal and relevant facts about that animal. Many of the facts are quantitative, such as length, width and a danger rating. The quantitative information in those categories is used in playing the game – see page 2 for game rules.

How This Project Can Be Useful

  • Adds a new and exciting possibility to the trading card format – by including a number of quantitative categories on any trading cards students create (on any scientific, literary, cultural, geographic or historical topic), students will be able to play Trump, or design a range of interesting card games that will reinforce learning
  • Combines content knowledge with a fun way to share and remember information
