Poetry, Poets and Becoming Writers/Wabanaki Studies

School: West Bath

City/State: West Bath, ME

Grade(s): 4

Format(s): Poem

Subject(s): English Language Arts

Project Overview

Students engage in Units 1 and 2 of the 4th grade module "Poetry, Poets and Becoming Writers" to unpack what makes a poem a poem and explain what inspires writers to write poetry. Concurrently, students learn about the Wabanaki tribe to understand their daily life and culture. To culminate this study, students represent an aspect of Wabanaki daily life and culture through art that replicates Wabanaki birch bark carvings and double curved design motif. Incorporating the characteristics of poetry learned in Unit 1, each student also writes a poem inspired by their art that showcases what they've learned about what makes a poem a poem.
